A Slight Interruption in the Madness of Florida Education, or do I mean Politics?

Enter at your own risk.  The lines are being drawn in the sand.  The Jeb Bush/Governor Scott/Gerard Robinson camp will follow the advice of a PR firm and talk high standards.  Wait right there...Jeb and his camp have been boasting of high standards and raising them for years. Scratching my head, I am curious  how removing the multiple choice items relevant to punctuation, capitalization, and grammatical choices years ago was raising the standard. The results were poor back then and then…

Earthquake Could Alter Education Landscape in California

Latest temblor to hit the Golden State is a lawsuit that could result in a major tectonic shift in education.

In September of 1975, due to New York City’s dire fiscal situation, I was laid off from my teaching position at P.S. 125 in Harlem. I lost my job not because I was a bad teacher, but because I was hired a few months after the teacher in the room next to mine…who was a lousy teacher.  Using seniority, or last in/first out (LIFO), as a way to…

An Open Letter to Jeb Bush and Patricia Levesque: What Future Do You Have in Mind for Florida's Students?

One is better able to understand this if they reside in Florida, where our students' Writing proficiency rate dropped from about 80 to about 30 in the three grades in which they are tested. But wait, there is more. The State Board of Education then moved the bar back so percentages of proficient students would again be around 80% via a teleconference.  So is that the way accountability works when the results are negative and illusions shattered? It comes down to a phone call..hmm. The state…

Statistically Speaking, Florida.. I Don't Believe in Them!

Florida's education statistics were front and center all week.  As I prepare for my son's college graduation, I can't help but wonder how different his future would be had we lived by statistics.  A '08 graduate of an outstanding public high school in Boca Raton, Jeff attended twelve years of Florida's public schools. Are Florida's politicians/legislators experiencing karma for their education deform acts? Repeal SB736

Finally, I saw an education miracle in Florida.  In the time of a conference call, writing proficiency rates, (which had dropped from 80 to 30) returned to 80. This illuminates the absence of a sound accountability system in the state, despite the speeches from Jeb Bush, Pat Levesque, Michelle Rhee, and Matt Ladner.  This highlights the lack of care by the decsion makers in making changes which paint a picture as decided by phone call participants, not teacher effectiveness, not fair,…See More

A Florida Miracle at Last....Writing Proficiency rates go from 30% to about 80% in the time of a phone call

WOW! Imagine the efficiency of a phone call to change the picture of Florida's writers. Who needs nistruction when a phone call can do so much?? This fiasco where Florida's students were provided a new test, increased cutoff score, and changed scoring resulted in drops of acceptable wirters from about  80 to 30  in the three grade levels of the test.  Fear not, the SBOE reversed itself and now , after a conference call, Florida's students write acceptably to a high degree. Magic..noAbbra…See More
